Before choosing one let's think why a certain amount of humidity can become bad in our home. Humidity is related to increase of fungal population in our carpets, wallpaper or other objects in our home. This fungi has the scientific name of Stachybotrys chartarum   commonly known as mold. The mold keeps reproducing by releasing tiny spores in the air. These spores when they reach the moist object start to develop rapidly. Every house has different dehumidification needs. We need a sort of formula to calculate these needs before going into a store. The person from that store might not tell us the real truth knowing that he or she has to gain some sort of profit from that sale. Accurate calculation of moisture load can be done after gathering data with measurement instruments like humidity gauges. Anyway every person can calculate their needs knowing the surface of their dwelling and using tables for that.

They have to be provided with a safety mechanism for overflowing or with the possibility for connecting to a hose.

Its better to choose one that drains water automatically and that requires minimum maintenance. The cheapest solution from all is to put on a plate the common kitchen salt which has  hygroscopic property - that means it can attract water from the air.
